Ingredient Spotlight: Shea Butter

History

Shea butter is extracted from a nut that grows on the African Shea Tree (vitellaria paradoxa). The nut, found in the centre of the fruit produced by this tree, is rich in oil. Shea butter is used in Africa as a skin and hair treatment, and has also been used as a cooking oil, and nutrition booster.

Skin Benefits

A key ingredient in Barefoot Naturals Body Butter, shea butter has so many benefits, it feels like magic! This creamy, aromatic butter is not only a powerful moisturizer, but also has the power to heal many skin ailments, such as eczema and dermatitis. Because of fatty acids that help retain elasticity and moisture, shea butter is a heavy duty hydrator for skin and hair. Some additional benefits include:

  • Prevention of stretch marks

  • Aiding in collagen production

  • Anti-inflammatory properties

  • Antioxidants: Vitamin C, E

Butter Quality

Quality matters! In order to retain its benefits, shea butter must be unrefined and high quality. Barefoot Naturals uses unrefined, fair trade, certified organic shea butter from Ghana.
